(These are all pictures of Havanas I
found on the web, I haven't gotten mine on the computer, yet.)
This is about my Havana rabbits. I purchased a "starter" herd of 4 with one doe already pregnant. Unfortunately, the doe didn't take care of that litter very well. So, I still had 2 does and 2 bucks to work with. I mated the younger doe to the younger buck and out came seven bunnies!
They all looked healthy and were doing fine... but one managed to somehow suffocate itself by getting stuck in the cage in an awkward position. And then one broke its own back so we humanely disposed of it. (Yes, they can jump in such a way that they break their own back.) I would say that 3 of the original were excellent, 3 average and 1 a little scrawny. The scrawny one broke its back and one of the excellents managed to get stuck in the cage.
Now, I still have 5 healthy baby bunnies from that litter that are about 10 weeks old at this point (Aug 31, 2009) and the older doe has conceived again (the one I bought pregnant). She only has 2 though... not sure what her problem is, her first litter was only 3. Anyway, I mated her with the older buck because she wouldn't have it any other way. Really, I tried mating her with the younger buck and she kicked him across the cage! But, so far these 2 babies are doing well at 6 days old.
All of the babies seem to be black... which I was hoping for a blue
or chocolate
. They have them in their
lines, just none yet. Not sure if I'll ever get one from this crew.
I might have to introduce another line.
